Throwing Caution to the Wind

For our annual potluck Thanksgiving, I made sugar-free cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes made with Splenda and roasted vegetables. My original intention was to have a diabetic friendly holiday, save for a small sampling of cornbread dressing. But once I saw all the delectable dishes made by family and friends, I decided to throw caution to the wind. Well, it wasn't exactly a full-on throw. It was more like a light toss. But there was definitely distance between me and caution.

I had a dollop of just about everything that was offered: turkey, pot roast, lasagna, dressing, broccoli-rice casserole, pinto beans, my mom's green bean casserole, collard greens, my delicious roasted vegetables and cranberry sauce. I even had a small slice of red velvet cake. It was soooo good and worth every single carbohydrate gram.

To my surprise, my fasting blood sugar the day after my indulgence was only 4 points higher than the day before. I was very pleased. But I won't be tempting fate again anytime soon. I am back on my diet plan until the next special event, which probably won't be Christmas since it will just be my uncle and I.

On a side note, our quiet family gathering almost turned into a black family reunion of the raucous sort when one of the relatives started to unload the four 5 ft. tall speakers from his truck so that he could hook them up to his laptop and bless the neighborhood with his musical expressions. Fortunately, more sensible relatives talked him out of it.

I must admit I was a little bit disappointed. I was kinda looking forward to showing off my electric slide skills. Oh well. Maybe next year.

P.S. Love the white guy in that video.

Good to see that you gave yourself a little treat, or selection of treats. The holidays are no time for sticking to diets. And did that guy want to throw an old-school block party for your family or what? The neighbors probably would not have approved.

thanks for the laugh, grizz!

and i, too, am glad you loosened up your buttons, girl.

a friend of mine went on a raw foods diet for three months and lowered her carbs dramatically. her doctor said that it would take someone years to get it that low on that diet.

i miss our talks...when life gets less busy, ill call you!

OLD SCHOOL NEVER HURT NOBODY!!!

Ohmigod, I want bumper sticker that says that. Or a tee.

Look into Stevia, my sweet! It's a natural sugar substitute that will not hurt you and actually has some health benefits. Artificial sweetners are really really bad. They actually screw up your digestion and that's the least of it. I can't actually believe they are legal. Sorry if it sounds like a scolding - it's not, just want you to be healthy. Happy holidays!

m/p said "loosened up your buttons" and the Pussycat Dolls had a party in my head for the following three minutes. oooooooooooooooooooooo HOT.

The saving grace for this vid was them NOT playing the actual Electric Slide song. "It's Electric! Boogiewoogiewoogie." Ugh.

Mr. Man cracked me up when he went "Oh, see ..." just like a black girl when he got thrown off the game by an unexpected move.

And chile, I am GLAD you had some goodies, cause now I can confess to the binge I've been on. I suck. I'd be in the hospital right now if I had one more Oreo cookie.
