Fringes, tagged me for a book meme that I thought was interesting, so I will start with that one.
Three books that I've always meant to read, but have not:
- Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. Every summer I tell myself that I am going to read this book, and every year the summer comes to a close without me having cracked the spine. Even though I've seen both versions of the movie, I want to read the book because there is a scene in the original movie where it's made evident that some sort of sexual game is played between Lolita and Humbert, but we are never told what that game is. I'm hoping the book will clear that up.
- Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child. I would love to own both volumes of this book (The Boyfriend, are you paying attention?), and then attempt to cook everything in them. Oh, who am I kidding? If I work 4 or 5 recipes from those books into my repertoire, I'll be doing good.
- The End of the Affair by Graham Greene.I started reading this book years ago, but never finished it. Now, I can't even tell you where it is. I hear it's a really moving book. Someday maybe I'll find out for myself.
Books that changed my life:
- Search for Significance by Robert McGee. I've mentioned this book before on my blog, but I'm too lazy to go look it up. Much of my understanding of the grace of God comes from this book, and it's principles are the foundation upon which I stand. If it were not for this book, I would probably be in therapy right now.
- The Heart of Christianity by Marcus Borg. Robert McGee and Marcus Borg are located on opposite ends of the Christian spectrum. McGee believes that the Bible is factually accurate and should be taken literally. Borg contends that the Bible should be seen as metaphor and does not have to be factually accurate in order to teach truths about God. For instance, you don't have to believe that the earth was created in 7 days to believe that God created the earth. McGee represents an old way of thinking for me. Borg is opening up my mind to a new way of seeing God.
- Naughty Spanking Stories from A to Z by Rachel Kramer Bussel. Ha! I threw that in for comic relief. And to break up all these books on religion. The Boyfriend got me this book 2 Christmases ago, and he gave me volume 2 this past Christmas. Both volumes are filled with hot, spanking stories, although there's nothing really life changing about them. Unless you consider having your bottom whacked until it's beet red life changing.
The one book I haven't stopped talking about since the day I read it:
- Traveling Mercies: Some Thoughts on Faith by Anne Lamott. Anne Lamott is the kind of liberal Christian that would make my conservative, fundamentalist friends recoil in horror. That's exactly why I love her. She cusses like a sailor, sleeps with her boyfriends, is pro-choice, and supports gay rights. And yet she has an immense love for God that is genuine and undeniable. I talked up Traveling Mercies so much that one of my co-workers is now reading the book. I'm spreading the joy that is Anne Lamott (and also the joy of progressive christianity.) She also wrote a kickass book on writing called Bird by Bird that I plan to read. Someday.

I've got you beat on Lolita--I actually checked the book out of a library in order to read it on a weeklong vacation, and I never read page one. How bad is that, to have the damn book in your hand and still not read it?
And a spanking book?!? How naughty of you!
I've read excerpts from Bird by Bird, which was my first intro to its author. She seems like a wonderful person and I lover her attitude on life.
Thanks for participating in the meme!
believe it or not i have read "Search for Significance"...i've told you that before I think....
Yep, my cellmate in jail brought it to me after he got out...served it up like roomservice...I was in for another 3 days, a week all told.
Anyway, I could probably still use a little Therapy myself!
I'm with the metaphor version of the bible. I have read Rabbi Harold Kushner's, When Bad Things Happen To Good People and his new one, Overcoming Life's Disappointments and they have both changed my views and beliefs about the bible, the role of Moses, what God is like and what we can expect from Him. I am not Jewish but he offers such a sensible interpretation of so much in a real "now" kind of way. Both fairly short books well worth getting.
You have given me a few ideas for books I want to read, for which I thank you.
I'm only telling you this because I'm drunk, but I once answered a personal ad from a guy who wanted to spank someone. I gave it my best, but I just couldn't get into it. As soon as it started hurting, I made him stop.
Oh, CP, I don't like to hurt either. I can't believe I'm saying this (Can I claim being drunk too?), but The Boyfriend is an awesome spanker. His love pats sting, but they never hurt, if that makes sense.
Anne Lamott had her share of problems, yet I admire her honesty. "Bird by Bird" is a nice approach for writing ... or blogging for that matter.
lolita...possibly my favorite book. the annotated version is also excellent!
I'm here from James Burnett's blog, and I picked the right post to meet you. I have some knowledge about the Old and New Testaments, and spanking. I also have done quite a bit of cooking. I don't write much, but it's nice meeting you anyway!
Thanks for stopping by CEO! Don't be a stranger.
oh wow! I LOVE Anne Lamott! And I love the term "Traveling Mercies" ... which I now bestow upon all traveling friends - no matter what path they are on ....
Have you tried Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller? His subtitle is: Nonreligious thoughts on Christian Spirituality - He is sort of a male Anne Lamott ... kind of ....
I have discovered this new church here in Houston called Ecclesia - they have a 'satellite' plant church in my community .... okay, so it is a much younger crowd than I, but I like spareness of it and the cool band that plays (we meet in a movie theater ??) Anyone who feels comfortable wearing converse sneakers to church is my kind of church to be at! Ah - diversion - my point is that the founder of the church, Chris Seay (who has written a number of books himself - one comparing the movie The Matrix to Christianity ...) is involved in writing a new Bible, called the Ecclesia Bible Society. It is all on the up and up: theologians, scholars, big name publisher .... but what I love is his idea that modern bibles have stripped the original writings bare of their poetry, metaphors and beauty ...
This is a laborious project, I am certain. However, he left his latest completed 'book' on the back table for us to pick up: The Voice - the gospel of John ... well, i can't say enough about the differences and beauty I find reading it - how he moves scriptures around to make more logical sense in the 'story' and then boxes 'outtakes - what he thinks John might be thinking or saying as he writes this gospel ...
okay - enough waxing prosaic on Christianity .... I had a great laugh on the spanking volumes ... it's always nice to see someone else's naughty side ;)
oh and Lolita - this is the third time in 24 hours that I have come across this book - I believe in the power of three's .... I think I need to read it!
rdg, I have seen Blue Like Jazz at amazon.com. I'll have to check it out!
Isn't it good to find a church you feel excited about?
Hey, I did this meme, too. I loved Bird by Bird. Having it end made me cry, which is weird since it's a book ABOUT writing. I'm going to give your suggestion a try. Traveling Mercies? Tender Mercies? I forget what it's called already. Hang on a minute, after I post this comment I'll go check.
